About Physical Theater Improvisation

Image of Heather Lundy

Heather Lundy practices Physical Theater Improvisation, an improvisational performance practice in which the performer opens to the world of spontaneous narrative expressed through language, movement, and sound. Physical Theater Improvisation is a practice for cultivating kinesthetic awareness, honing stage skills, and a medium for performance.

The improvisor is the vessel for expression and the content is always new. Improvised physical performance allows the performer to craft the unexpected, embrace the non-linear and ride the wild waves of story through the ineffable possibilities of embodied expression. The form increases a performer's ability to hold and articulate experience.

Heather's performance style, teaching and practice is heavily influenced by Action Theater™. Heather is a licensed Action Theater instructor.

What is Action Theater?

Action Theater logo

Action Theater (AT) is a matriculated training system for learning and practicing the art of improvisation. AT was developed by Master Improvisor Ruth Zaporah. A body-based discipline, AT is designed to assist students in deconstructing habitual patterns in the areas of movement, sound, and voice. Action Theater training provides a venue for students to integrate mind and body while enlivening the imagination.

AT differs from other types of improvisational study in that the participants to do not practice "roles" in scenes. Instead, the improvisor follows the changing content of their imagination responding with physical, vocal and/or verbal action. Improvisors expand their in-the-moment awareness to include sensation, feeling, thought, memory, imagination, and intuition.

Students of Action Theater can earn hours towards Practitioner and Teacher levels of training. For more, visit www.actiontheater.com.
